Wasps

Wasps are typically considered a dangerous insect, but they actually are highly beneficial for our ecosystem. Wasps prey on bugs that are often considered a nuisance, and are able to aid in pollination. Although extremely beneficial to the environment, they can pose a threat to humans due to their ability to sting multiple times. On this page, you will learn about wasps in your area and how to eradicate them.

How do wasps benefit us?

Wasps are a predatory insect and prey on other bugs that are considered a nuisance. Wasps feed on bugs such as flies, caterpillars, weevils, and small bugs that can ruin crops and gardens. Some farmers will even allow wasps to nest on their property so that they can eliminate crop-feeding insects. Unfortunately, when threatened or agitated they tend to sting humans, so it is recommended to handle their nests with care or contact a professional if you need assistance eliminating their presence.

Preventative Measures:

  • Wasps tend to gravitate towards your home in the colder months of the year, it is recommended to seal up any cracks, crevices, or cavities within your home to avoid a nest forming within your insulation and/or walls.
  • During the warmer months, queen wasps emerge from their hibernation state and are in search of nourishment. Wasps are drawn to sugary substances such as fallen fruits and spilled foods or drinks. It is recommended to clean up any areas outside that may have fallen fruit, dirty garbage cans, or spilled food or beverage.
  • Place your fragrant flowers far away from your outdoor living area. Wasps are naturally drawn to strong smells and will gravitate towards any flowers with a strong scent.
  • IF you plan on eradicating a smaller nest yourself, make sure to only approach the nest at night, as the wasps tend to remain dormant as they sleep.
